How KONE elevated skills and knowledge

Going digital: KONE chose Conveya to take skills tracking from paper to pixels

Who are KONE?

With over 60,000 employees across 60 countries worldwide, KONE is an international engineering and service company based in Espoo near Helsinki, Finland and was founded in 1910.

Executive Summary

As Conveya's first ever client, a relationship was built with both KONE's national and state based apprenticeship managers.

The aim for the work between Conveya and KONE was to upgrade their current paper based logbooks to digital versions.

Initially data was gathered using our feedback tool to understand the company's employee experience.

The national apprentice manager had already designed a paper-based logbook to track KONE specific skills that apprentices needed to have exposure to.

The Challenges Faced

The main challenges KONE faced was a lack of visibility over their paper book entries. This meant management found it difficult to know what skills and jobs the apprentices needed to complete.

KONE came to Conveya with the request of developing our mobile app to allow their apprentices to log the workplace and job activity electronically.

Senior members of staff would need to approve the entries and the data would also need to be visible on the central Conveya dashboards.

ROI

The initial investment to develop the logbooks into a digital format was covered by the cost saved in printing 100+ of paperback logbooks annually, that would have to be reprinted and changed with every edit.

KONE now has visibility over what their apprentices are doing daily, how much time they are spending on each activity, and crucially what they are not doing.

Within the dashboard tables are available to show who has and has not made entries. This enables managers to engage quickly to ensure that lack of activity does not continue.  KONE can rotate staff to jobs where they will get the skills and hours they are missing.

How Did We Help?

We upgraded our mobile app significantly to build custom digital logbooks into the mobile APP.

The apprentices record their activity each day or week, with the activity expected and required outlined by KONE.

Every entry can log hours, include photo evidence, get time and date stamped against the individual work and have it all approved by supervisors.

The data is displayed on the central Conveya platform that KONE was previously using to gather employee feedback and to manage staff rotations.

No longer are paper logbooks being left on the bus or in the pub! The mobile app means that the apprentices have access to their logbooks and can make entries at any time. Since the successful implementation of the logbooks, we have completed several upgrades and the wider business has also developed their own version for Senior staff.
